The name of the publishing house is related to the outstanding personality of Theodor Spandugino, a Greek scholar of Byzantine origins, who made part of the Greek emigrants arrived in the Republic of the Lagoons after the fall of Constantinople in 1453.
An appreciated historic of that time, a man of universal wit, good diplomat and military chief, he was one of the influent persons in Venice and served its political interests, exactly because he was a subtle and good expert in Levant.
Chronicler of his time, having a great admiration for the Italian humanist culture, Theodor Spandugino was known especially through a reference work written in the language of his new homeland: “Discorso di Teodoro Spandugino Cantacusino Gentil’homo Constantinopolitano Dall’origine de’principiTurchi".
His work has been published several times and in the first half of the 16th century it was one of the most cited books regarding the Ottoman Empire.
Theodor Spandugino’s life is emblematic for the whole family, which during centuries has had both ups and downs, but it has always faced the vicissitudes of the time, and was born again like the Phoenix, from its own ashes.
